Chicago is in the top 15 of the nation's DUI cities, while Naperville tops the Chicago area in arrests for driving under the influence of alcohol.

DuPage County Ranks High in DUI Arrests

According to the state of Illinois, DuPage County has seen a slight upward creep in DUI arrests over the past several years, going from 5,152 in 2007 to 5,301 a year later. Those were the highest county totals in the state outside of Cook County.

Kane County Also Sees a Rise in DUIs

Adjacent Kane County has also seen drunk driving arrests rise in recent years, going from 1,702 in 2006 to 1,733 in 2008, affecting drivers in Geneva, St. Charles and throughout the county. Kane ranks fourth in the state in DUI arrests, following Cook, DuPage and Lake counties.

The state of Illinois says those arrests can result not only in jail time, but fines and other costs often unnoticed by drivers until they find themselves with a DUI conviction on their driving record:

  • $4,500: the average jump in car insurance costs following a DUI conviction
  • $3,350: court costs
  • $4,000: income loss due to jail, community service, court appearances, etc.
  • $580: driver's license reinstatement
  • $1,420: ignition interlock device installation, rental and monitoring fees

Those costs don't include the fine of up to $2,500 for a first-time DUI conviction in Illinois.
